Merivale parents formalise play area group BY GRACE CABELL Plans for a playground in Merivale have taken another step forward. A group of 15 parents has formally set up an incorporated society known as Merivale Community Playground Incorporated so they can raise money for the project. Concept plans have been approved by the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board. The group is fronted by Merivale mother Charlotte Gray, who hopes to raise more than $70,000 to build the playground at the Merivale Reserve in Rugby St. She decided to raise the money

herself after she wrote to the community board and was told there was the potential to install the playground, but no city council funding. The playground is proposed to be located north of the tennis court at the reserve. Ms Gray said once the money had been raised it would take up to six weeks to build and hopes the funds will be finalised and playground built within a year. “It doesn’t worry me how many hours I’ll need to put in. It needs to be done, it’s something so positive I don’t mind doing it,” she said. • Turn to page 2

Parents formalise group • From page 1 Ms Gray decided to go ahead and plan one herself after finding there were no playgrounds around within walking distance. “I have three children and I’m a person who feels you should bike or walk to the playground and that’s just not possible with the parks around now,” she said. The playground proposal will also involve the removal of the existing sunken paved court, the relocation of an existing seat and the removal of some of the existing planting. Papanui racers powered up Students at Papanui High School are ready to go head-to-head in a battle to demonstrate their electric vehicles’ ability on the racetrack. Alongside 15 other schools in Canterbury, the high school students have spent months designing and building their own vehicles from scratch for the EVolocity event on November 30 at Ruapuna Speedway. EVolocity is the largest electric motorsport event to hit the country, combining innovation and environmental ability to demonstrate electric vehicle performance and efficiency. The high school students have been attending design boot camps and even working over weekends to get an edge on the competition. The school has two teams and 10 students participating in the competition. Teacher Dave Ruddle who is involved in managing the teams, said the challenge of designing and building the vehicles had been a huge incentive for students. “Our students had no prior experience in this area but they were keen to build something different. After white boarding ideas they came up with a triangular vehicle shape and then set about making it work from a practical perspective. It’s been an evolutionary process and the goal has been development of a manoeuvrable and safe vehicle that will do the distance.

Nor’West News gets a new reporter

The Nor’West News has a new reporter – Grace Cabell. Grace is a graduate from the Canterbury University journalism school. If you belong to a community group or club and want to get your organisation’s news into the Nor’West News let Grace know. Email details to grace.cabell@christchurchstar. co.nz or phone 371 0777.

INNOVATION: Josh Wilson (seated), Michael Hann (left), Cameron Johnston (centre) and Joseph Dodd of Papanui High School with their design for the upcoming competition. We were lucky to get sponsorship from Orion and Ecoshop to help make the vehicles a reality,” said Mr Ruddle. Michael Hann, one of the students involved in the development said the team is hoping for a win in the speed controller category of the high school’s event. “There have been a number of challenges to get this far with one of the biggest being how to coordinate the steering of a threewheeled vehicle. We’ve got that

sorted now so it’s looking good,” said Michael. CPIT, in association with Electroflash and Enviroschools, has been running the series of boot camps over the past few months to assist students with their design and build and their expertise has been invaluable according to Rob McEwen, executive director of Association Promotion of Electric Vehicles. “This project encourages students to take up what we call

STEM studies (science, technology, engineering and maths) and so we see it as being a hugely important component of developing a future generation of technologically-savvy people,” said Mr McEwen. Progress of the high school competitors can be found on Facebook.com/EvolocityNZ. Tickets for EVolocity are on sale now and can be purchased via the EVolocity website www.evolocity. co.nz

▌IN ▌ BRIEF Ducklings rescued

Spring means duckling time, and for some firefighters this often means rescuing ducklings from drains. Last week firefighters from the St Albans branch responded to a call regarding five ducklings stuck in a drain on Normans Rd. Senior firefighter Brian Reid said over the years they have had numerous callouts to rescue ducklings. “We got one out but then then the rest shot along the drain. But we managed to get the other four from a drain down the footpath.”

Award for bacon

Chris Timbs of Peter Timbs Meats on Edgeware Rd has won the 100% New Zealand Bacon Competition for the company’s shoulder bacon. The competition covered five categories – middle, dry-cured middle; shoulder; streaky; and middle-eye.

NOR’WEST NEWS

Awesome ideas pushed to Ministry of Awesome founder Kaila Colbin was once a top amateur boxer in New York City. Now, she fights for people with entrepreneurial dreams in Christchurch. Max Towle talked to her about Coffee and Jam, cooking school, and street smarts. Hi Kaila, I can immediately tell you’re from the US from your accent. That’s right, I was born and bred in New York City.

What’s life like there? It’s a little bit like the movies to be honest. There’s always something amazing going on and the kids are all doing ridiculous

VISION: Kaila Colbin wants the Ministry of Awesome to foster entrepreneurial ideas in Christchurch. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

things. I thought it was a great place to grow up. I thought I was street smart growing up, but honestly, when I first came to New Zealand about 10 years ago I had trouble with the simple things like hanging up a clothes line or lighting a fire. I couldn’t tell the difference between a sheep and a goat. A friend once said my intelligence goes down with population density when I move around. Why come to New Zealand? It was a boy who brought me here, actually. Are you still together? We’re not together anymore but we are still friends and I am eternally grateful to him for bringing me to this country. Did you have any plans when you came? I literally had no idea what I was going to do when I first came here. I don’t have a simple job title like an accountant or lawyer so I had trouble finding work as someone who was broadly

capable. I had done a whole heap of things before that in the US. My degree was in hotel and restaurant administration. I’ve worked in visual printing, in the wholesale jewellery industry . . . I guess I would call myself a serial entrepreneur. Then I worked in graphic design and for a PR company. I also work for TEDxChristchurch, which is a programme of local events that bring people together to spread ideas. We’ve had events where inspirational speakers speak on a whole heap of subjects. How was the Ministry of Awesome founded? In early 2012, myself and a few like-minded people decided that the city needed support for all the people who were trying, and maybe struggling, to do awesome things. At our first meeting, which was just me, Vicki Buck, Sam Johnson, and (former Ngai Tahu strategy manager) Sacha McMeeking, we just had a coffee at the Addington Coffee Co-op and signed a mock constitution. In our early days, we would just have dinner with someone rather than having a meeting in an office or something. What is the Ministry of Awesome? We try and open doors for people and help them make connections with key people in the city. We run around 70 events each year and have lots of people come along to our meetings. We have

hundreds of one-on-ones with people to offer them support. We basically want to push people in Christchurch who are entrepreneurial. People shouldn’t think they’re crazy just because they have a crazy idea. What we might see is a computer programmer turn up at one of our meetings and say they want to get involved in a project, then someone else might say: “Hey, I’m looking for a computer programmer.” We try and foster those serendipitous moments. Pick one recent success that the ministry has had? Just recently, we gave a hand to Amy Burke who’s running the Help for the Homeless campaign in Christchurch. We saw what she was doing and called her up and asked if she wanted help running her meetings and putting a structure in place for her organisation. We let them use our office space. We’re helping them get set up as an official organisation. These may seem like small things, but sometimes people don’t know how to do them. There are people trying to do incredible things, but they may have small barriers that stop them from doing what they want to do. How is it funded? The Ministry of Awesome has been incredibly lucky to get so much funding. The Canterbury Community Trust has backed us since our beginning. Kiwibank has been a great funder, and so has the city council.

become realities

ACTIVE: Kaila Colbin gives a presentation at the regular Coffee and Jam meeting. What about your “Coffee and Jam” meetings? Our meetings are extremely casual, but we now have about 80 people coming each week. And I’m fairly sure they’re not just coming for the free food. The purpose of the meetings is to help people connect with each other. We usually have someone pitch a new project or business in Christchurch, and then afterwards there’s an entrepreneurial educational speaker. How did you meet people like Vicki Buck and Sam Johnson? Sam I met through TEDx. But I think we’re all just like-minded

people. Christchurch is a very small place and once you start to tug on the thread that is Christchurch, you find out it’s connected to the entire city. What’s an average day in your life? If there is such a thing? A typical day would be lots of meetings. Something like the Ministry of Awesome is only successful because of the team behind it. It’s a lot of reaching out to random people, whether on Facebook or on the phone. We brought the former mayor of San Francisco down to Christchurch recently. How that happened was I Googled him, cold

called him from the white pages, first spoke to his wife on the phone, then convinced him to come here. How would you like to see the future of the city develop? My hope for Christchurch is that we realise the promise that emerged from the rubble. I don’t think that’s a promise of shiny new buildings, but of people who are creative, active, engaged, quirky, interesting, and diverse. We need that kind of reputation as a city. If someone is cutting edge, Christchurch should be the kind of place that welcomes them. Do you often travel back to the US? I do. I’m on the board of the cooking school my mother founded in New York. It’s the oldest natural foods cooking school in the US. It’s called the Natural Gourmet Institute and we have an accredited professional chef training programme. My family is back in the States which is another reason why I go back and forth so frequently. Are you a great cook? Actually, no, not really. I’m usually surrounded by so many people who are fantastic in the kitchen. I’m more of an “eatie,” than a “cookie.” What are your hobbies? I am a rock climber and a boxer. I used to be quite a serious boxer in around the year 2000. I had about eight fights and I was ranked second in the US in my category as an amateur. I also try to explore more of the South Island when I can.

Residents’ ideas on centre to be heard BY GRACE CABELL

What the St Albans residents want to happen with their community centre will be presented at a meeting this week. The ShirleyPapanui Community Board will listen to ideas at its meeting on Wednesday. The views were taken Mike from a commuDavidson nity conversation at the Richmond Edgeware Bowling Club in Forfar St earlier this month. Staff have been through the information and will be making decisions out of the community consultation in the board meeting. Community board chairman Mike Davidson said residents are not happy with the transitional facility. “It acts like more of a meeting room than a community facility,” he said. The space is currently run by the city council but has been approved to be taken over by the St Albans Resi-

dents Association. The changeover is not likely to take effect until after Christmas. Co-chairwoman of the residents association, Emma Twaddell, said once the centre is back in community hands it will have an “opendoor” policy. Mr Davidson said that part of Emma the conversation Twaddell was to look at making a multipurpose facility with a pool. “We need to look at a permanent facility moving forward. The best way is to listen and see what people want in their community,” he said. Hot topics to come out of the meeting were the addition of the pool alongside the community centre, a tram leading up to Edgeware Village and an arthouse cinema. Two sites being discussed for the new community facility are the site of the current transitional centre in Colombo St and also the former Edgeware pool site.

Wearable arts at Cotswold

Last week senior pupils at Cotswold School celebrated their Wearable Arts Week with three performances. The pupils spent weeks creating wacky outfits for the night time and matinee shows. In groups from nine different classes the eight to 11-year-olds chose themes and worked cooperatively to create their wearable wonders. The themes ranged from under the sea, Kiwi icons and fabulous food to the balance of nature and construction on planet Earth. Pupil Sarah Andrews, 10,

said using the hot glue gun to stick on feathers was the hardest part. “For the mask we used an old mask and made a long beak and created a new beak paint colour. It took us four weeks to cut and hot glue gun all the feathers,” she said. Ashleigh Loper, 8, said she liked wearing the alien costume her group made. “We used rubber gloves filled with foam to make extra arms, and we found some spare cloth and cut out stars to put it on the back,” she said.

FEATHERY FUN: Sarah Andrews, 10, wears her parrot for nature v construction.

The pupils have spent the last term investigating design and advertising, assessing market need and creating products for a school community market day. A profit of $1900 was raised and donated to the Child Cancer Foundation. Pupils Annabelle Beer, Olivia Gifford and Chloe Roberts sold out of 30 toffee apples, 81 popcorn bags and 34 lolly skewers, raising $202

NO DEBATE ABOUT THAT: A St Andrew’s College debating team defended their title on September 19 at the Canterbury School Debating Competition final. Year 11 students April Oakley, Harrison Smith and Isabella Garbett were named the junior champions against Cashmere High School. The moot of the evening was “This house would sacrifice New Zealand’s outstanding natural landscape in order to generate clean energy and fight climate change” and the St Andrew’s team were affirmative. The team with teacher Jacqueline Yoder.

to go towards the charity. “For the toffee apples we packaged them in a funky patterned cellophane and tied it with red ribbon. For the lolly skewers we just put a sweeties sticker on the bottom and wrapped it around,” they said. Customers said their products were “yummy and perfectly packaged” and said the sign and stall were “beautiful and creative with lots of detail.” The girls thought the market day went very well and decided they want to do one every term.

Chilling out at Barnardos You can relax. This hearing aid completely disappears.

A new German engineered hearing aid provides automatic functionality and natural sound quality in a virtually invisible design. Not only tiny in size, it has been designed and tested to comform to the internationally recognised IP67 standard, making it dust and water resistant.

Children at Barnardos Kidstart Childcare in Shirley couldn’t wait any longer for a snow day. After weeks of watching and waiting at the door when the sky looked dark and stormy, making mountains in the sandpit and sprinkling flour on them, and dancing elaborate snow dances, it looked like nothing would work. Centre manager Dale Wiremu decided enough was enough, and the children would have snow. “A phone call to Southern Ice solved the problem. They very kindly offered to donate some left over ice for the children and one of our lovely parents picked it up and delivered it,” she said. “While it was being unloaded

we did a snow dance and talked about what the sky looked like when it snowed. We moved like the snow clouds and drifted and twirled down to the ground like snowflakes. When it was ready we went out and found snow!” She said that the children loved the snow. “The children just loved it, picking it up and tasting it, sliding in it, lying down and making snow angels, throwing it in the air.” Many conversations were started amongst the children about why the ice melted and how long it would last. With cold weather forecast in the next few weeks, the children are still hoping for the real stuff.

SNOW DAY: Nevaeh Hendrickson, 1, enjoyed a mouthful of “snow” at Barnardos Kidstart Childcare in Shirley, with Rico Ratu, 4 and Leila SipikiAlavisi, 3.

Road work celebrated

Informative expo for elderly

BY MURRAY WILLIAMS, PAPANUI HERITAGE GROUP

In a previous article the Waimairi County Council’s experiment of paving a portion of the Main North Rd with concrete was alluded to. This was seen as an example of a local body keen to improve infrastructure for the benefits of all citizens and the council decided to mark the occasion with a special luncheon held at the council chambers on November 29, 1928. The official photograph hints at the mellow mood of the guests, although closer examination reveals that social and economic gender inequality was still a marked feature of Christchurch society at this time. It is true that New Zealand had led the world in legislating for the female franchise in 1893, yet 35 years later there were no women among the invited guests, a group consisting of 70 local and central government politicians, officials and prominent business leaders, in fact the only female presence in the photograph was in the form of waitressing staff. Even Mrs Newnham, the WCC’s chairman’s wife who had performed the opening ceremony earlier that day, does not appear to have attended the function. The Press reporter recorded a summary of the speeches that accompanied the luncheon; at least 20 of those present felt

LAVISH: A special luncheon in the council chambers in 1928. obliged to participate in proposing and replying to toasts. When enlarged and enhanced there is plenty of evidence from the photograph that this was a social event that was well lubricated, a selection of beer, whisky, gin and port being provided for the occasion. The speeches started with the obligatory loyal toast when Mr Newnham expressed the heartfelt relief of all those present that the health of His Majesty, the King, had recently improved. The rhetoric that followed took the form of a relatively good-natured political debate; Harry Holland, the leader of the Labour party reflected the attitude of several other speakers by claiming that the increased subsidy of ₤3 from the Main Highways Board for each pound spent by the local council was

an overdue change in policy as the money raised from levies on motorists had for too long had been ‘lying idle in Wellington.’ Various local body politicians agreed that there should be a South Island Main Highways Board to ensure that southern motorists would receive a fair allocation of the fund. The Mayor of Christchurch, J. K. Archer, well known for his leftwing views, complained that the price of cement was still too high and hinted at the dark forces of a conspiracy among suppliers that were profiteering at the expense of ratepayers. Taken together, the photographic image and the newspaper report provide an interesting snapshot of the social customs and conventions current in Christchurch in the late 1920s.

The Positive Ageing Expo is being held at Papanui High School today. The expo includes more than 130 exhibitors, a full schedule of events and the Botanic Gardens Green Caterpillar. It runs until 2.30pm and is a highlight of the older person’s calendar in Canterbury. Event organiser Yvonne Palmer said the day is both informative and entertaining. “We have 135 exhibitors coming along – from those who sell goods and services to help older people, community organisations and health practitioners. There will also be an entertainment stage which will feature speakers and musicians.” The expo is a way for older people to see all of the goods and services available to them and to try them out. “The day is free for everyone and grows every year. Last year, we attracted [up to almost 4000] people . . . we have no doubt we’ll trump that this year,” she said. Other popular exhibits include the New Zealand Police, who bring along communications call centre computers, health information, SeniorNet computer advice and the various food stalls with tasters and samples. Parking is available on site and the Botanic Gardens Green Caterpillar vehicle is available to ferry people from the Papanui High School gate to the venue inside.

of approximately 1700 acres (700 hectares) owned by William Boag (1824-1898). The original large homestead was close to the present water tower in Burnside Park, at the start of Kendal Avenue. It was surrounded by the trees his family planted, and as Christchurch expanded out from the city centre the farm was eventually subdivided for roading and housing development. At the top end of Memorial Ave opposite Burnside Park, Kendal Avenue is a street that slices across a general area of the northwest of the city. The street effectively links the suburbs of Burnside and Bishopdale on the geographical border of Wairakei Road. A drive along Kendal Avenue winds around a quiet leaf tree lined street of high density suburbia. The leafy image of the geography complements the ‘green belt’ focus of the surrounding suburbs; there are a number of notable heritage trees listed in the City Plan for Bryndwr Road, Flay Reserve and Greers Road. The urban sprawl of the late 1940’s - 1960’s resulted in Burnside and Bryndwr becoming two of the quickest growing areas in New Zealand; this trend was accelerated by the Group Housing Scheme consisting of new subdivisions and World War 2 ex-servicemen returning to build family homes. The suburb of Burnside, of which Kendal Ave is located, was named because of the small creeks that encompass the headwaters of the Waimairi Stream. The Scottish meaning for the name Burnside is “by the side of small stream”.

Poppies wanted for memorial BY GRACE CABELL

A memorial poppy waterfall is being created by the Papanui RSA as a tribute of respect and remembrance of New Zealand servicemen and servicewomen. The creative community project will commemorate 100 years since the first Anzac soldier landed at Gallipoli. It is due for completion on Anzac Day 2015. The 1200-member RSA has challenged members and friends to participate by knitting or crocheting poppies for the project. Office manager Wendy

Clark said it was quite special for the Papanui branch. She said they would love to see all poppy creations and they can be taken to the office for placing on the waterfall. “It’s a good project because the women can get involved in it. A lot of older woman are really getting into it. “If there are younger people who want to place them in remembrance of their great-grandparents, they can come along and do that,” she said. Patterns and wool are available from the Papanui RSA office, located behind the shops on the corner of

Papanui and Harewood Rds. Patterns are also available at 5000poppies.wordpress. com. A spokeswoman for the RSA said any shade of red could be used along with different wool textures. “Keep your creativity restricted to under 10 to 14 centimetres in diameter. Be creative, you may find other patterns on the web or in books, or you can create your own pattern,” she said. Participants can also be involved with the National WW100 project. The memorial can be found on display in the main foyer. COLOUR: Poppies at the Papanui RSA.

Teen raises $3400 for Rwandan girl BY GRACE CABELL It took more than nine years and a lot of hard work, but Belfast teenager Nathaniel van Hout was determined to raise enough money to give poverty-stricken Rwandan girl Grace Muhayimana an education. After watching a movie about the Rwandan genocide, Nathaniel began raising money to sponsor a child when he was only eight years old. He began saving $45 a month to provide Grace an education

and medical care under the Tear Fund Christian Action sponsorship. “There were times when I collected up to $50 for her birthday or Christmas. Fat Freeze machine gets results! The cryolipolysis (Fat Freeze) machine is so effective – you will be amazed by the results.

H

ow does the treatment work? With our treatment, we use a specially designed vacuum to gently draw up the skin area; the automated cooling handles then starts the treatment, which can be programmable, including treatment time. The great thing about this treatment, apart from that it’s simple and really effective, is that it’s designed to be a ‘lunchtime job’, where clients can return to normal activities right afterwards without discomfort and the only tell-tale signs being a flushed skin appearance (on the treated area) for a few hours.

Q&A

WOW!

50% off first treatment

Research from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery suggests a loss of 20 to 40 per cent for each treatment (where 20 per cent is the average). After a two-month wait, when you are ready for the next treatment, you can look forward to another 20 per cent and even more being lost. Sometimes one treatment is enough. The technology of using cold to decompose fat cells was pioneered by the president of the Pennsylvania University School of Medicine in America and has since gained FDA approval as well as European CE. Unlike other slimming technologies out there, this one is designed as an alternative to liposuction for areas of localised fat, for example, back rolls, muffin tops, love handles.

Can I use this treatment?

Good candidates have bulges in certain areas they want to get rid of. This is not a weight loss solution for people who are obese. The client should always consult with the practioner.

What can I do after the treatment?

Usually we have patients going back to work immediately after the session. Some patients experience redness, tingling or numbness in the treated area, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. For others some bruising and discomfort may occur.

How long until I see results?

Visible changes occur as quickly as three weeks, while the most dramatic results show after two months. The body will continue to flush out fat cells along with its toxins up to four to six months after treatment.

After 60 days, 1 treatment

Are these changes here to stay, or will they disappear? The affected fat cells will be eliminated. As long as you maintain your weight with your normal diet and exercise, your long-term results should remain stable.

After 40 days, 1 treatment

Not suitable for people suffering from obesity, cardiac conditions or diabetes. Find Red Beauty at 336 Bealey Avenue. Phone 366 3414, or visit www.redbeauty.net.nz.

ebecca Cragnolini believes that people do not need to suffer in silence, but can take control of their own wellbeing using some simple but effective techniques. Self Hypnosis and Neurolinguistic Programming is based on the understanding that we are unique and we have all the resources within us to make the changes in our lives and attitudes. However, sometimes we require someone to work alongside to bring out these strengths. That’s where Rebecca comes in. She has 18 years of experience working in health for the Canterbury District Health Board and National Health Service in England and her passion for hypnosis is founded in her own discovery of how easily and effectively changes can take place when using these approaches. The system she employs is a series of techniques designed to help people get positive and successful results. It is based on the understanding that within each of us is a wealth of resources which we barely use but once tapped can change our lives. Over

the years we can develop beliefs and habits that initially serve a purpose but now are unhelpful such as believing will never be able to lose weight, stop smoking, be calm in a plane. Techniques such as goal setting, relaxation and visualisation exercises bring about the change. Rebecca believes that when we know the changes have come from within us, we can have confidence they are sustainable and we are in control. While many of her clients see her individually, she also offers group sessions and is happy to go into workplaces or social groups to talk about what she does. This is a gentle, empowering, pain-free system that lets us make our own changes based on the way we naturally learn and develop habits and is paired with Rebecca’s consistent positive feedback and support. Some clients see a change after just one visit, some after ten or more. It is highly individual, and working with a practitioner like Rebecca will provide support throughout the journey. amiltonJet NZ is the premiere family jet boat builder and service workshop in Canterbury.

Since the company was founded in 1960 as the boat building arm of waterjet manufacturer CWF Hamilton & Co, it has built thousands of jet boats used around the country, and throughout the world. As an indication of the quality of HamiltonJet NZ products, many of its jet boats from back to the 1960s and 70s are still in regular use today, and the HJNZ workshop can still supply most parts for even the oldest jet units and boats. Its full service workshop can carry out all repairs to aluminium, steel and fibreglass hulls and decks, jet unit servicing and impeller rebuilding, engine maintenance and tuning, along with refurbishing of windscreens, rub-rails, seats, engine covers and more. New Hamilton Jet boats come in a range of lengths to best suit the type of jet boating you are doing, and can be powered by the engine of your choice coupled to the worlds most popular

river jet unit - the HamiltonJet HJ212. Boats can be purchased as a complete turnkey package or as any combination of hull, deck, jet unit, engine and trailer for you to assemble and fit out to your own specifications. HamiltonJet boats hold their value better than any other jet boat manufacturer and when you buy from HamiltonJet NZ you have our personal guarantee of quality of workmanship and materials to ensure you get many years of safe and enjoyable family boating on NZ’s many rivers and lakes. This year HamiltonJet’s parent company CWF Hamilton & Co celebrates its 75th anniversary, along with the waterjet units 60th birthday. To commemorate this milestone the company is publishing a book on its history and the many challenges and triumphs it has experienced in becoming one of the country’s most iconic brands.

Process until fine; add oil and enough warm water to make a thin, pourable dressing. Season to taste. Toss the salad with some or all of the dressing and arrange on a serving platter. Garnish with snipped chives and cracked pepper. Tip: If you have excess dressing, keep in the fridge and use for pasta or as a marinade for chicken or over grilled fish.

HEARTY: Baby potato and salmon salad makes a good pot luck dinner dish. Chargrilled broccolini Serves 4 These beautiful thin-stemmed “mini broccoli’’ are the perfect cook-on-the-barbecue healthy green vegetable. They contain calcium, folate and iron, and are high in vitamin C. Charred, nutty and delicious served with either meat or fish, and the best bit — from fridge to table in less than five minutes, perfect. Ingredients 16 Broccolini, use up to 20 2 Tbsp Olive oil ½ tsp Salt 3 Tbsp Greek yoghurt ¼ tsp Smoked paprika, or chilli flakes Directions Trim broccolini stems to the same length. Toss in a bowl with oil and salt. Cook on a high heat until lightly charred and wilted. Serve garnished with greek yoghurt and sprinkle with smoked paprika or chilli flakes.

Coriander and lime grilled chicken Serves 4 Boneless chicken thighs are ideal for barbecuing as they cook all the way through fast. When cooking any meat it should not be cold straight from the fridge, allow it to stand at room temperature for at least 20 minutes before cooking so it cooks through evenly (not overcooked on the outside while the inside is still cold.) Ingredients 1½ Tbsp Fish sauce, or soy sauce 1½ Tbsp Brown sugar 2 tsp Ginger, finely grated or minced 8 Boneless chicken thighs, skinless (about 800g) Marinade 1 bunch Coriander, washed roots, stems and leaves, chopped 2 cloves Garlic, minced 1 Lime, finely zested ¼ cup Fresh lime juice Directions Blend all marinade ingredients together in a food processor (if you don’t have a food processor, chop the coriander very finely and mix with all other ingredients).

Help! I’ve got “quake-brain”

– what can I do about it?

S

ince the earthquakes turned our lives upside down, do you have days when everything is in the “too hard” basket? Do you have times when it’s hard to concentrate or prioritise all the things which need to be done and you just can’t seem to think straight however hard you try? Maybe you’ve joked about “quake-brain” or having a “senior moment” when you have struggled to remember something important, or perhaps you just can’t recall the last time you got a good night’s sleep. Earthquakes don’t just damage the built environment; they also tear apart the fabric of everyday life, quite literally turning the world upside down for those affected. Recovery isn’t just about repairing buildings and infrastructure, communities and lives need to be rebuilt too. We know from research that Cantabrians are weary, and that traumatic events like earthquakes - and dealing with their aftermath - take their toll on our minds and our bodies in many ways. New Zealand Red Cross have learned from international experience and created a series of training

Earthquakes don’t just damage the built environment; they also tear apart the fabric of everyday life, quite literally turning the world upside down for those affected. sessions for community groups and workplaces to help us understand the science of stress and give practical tips on how we can support each other through the recovery process. Community sessions are free – all you need to provide is the venue (the workplace sessions are charged at a cost.) So if you would like to learn more about how we respond to stress and how to cope with our natural reaction to an unnatural situation, why not book a free 45-minute training session for your community group? For more information or to book a workshop, visit www.redcross.org.nz/recoverytraining or phone 0800 468 873.

Combine the chicken with marinade and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or up to 24 hours. When ready to cook, remove chicken from fridge and stand at room temperature for 20-30 minutes. Cook on a preheated barbecue grill (medium to high heat) for 3-5 minutes on each side or until cooked through. Serve with a salad or slice chicken and toss with cooked vermicelli noodles, chopped fresh mint, shredded carrot, cucumber and a dressing made of fish sauce, lime juice, extra virgin olive oil and a bit of brown sugar. Coconut cashew coffee smoothie This dairy-free afternoon yumminess is surprisingly rich, creamy and satisfying. Adding chia seeds amps up the omega-3 content and gives a silky texture. Serves 1 Ingredients ¼ cup raw cashews ¼ cup desiccated coconut 1 Tbsp chia seeds 1 cup water 1 banana, pre-frozen in pieces (or just a banana) 1 tsp finely ground coffee beans (optional but yum) Directions Place cashews, coconut, chia seeds and water into a blender and run for about 30 seconds. Giving this stage a bit of time allows the water to soak in to the nuts and seeds nicely, making for a creamier end result. Add banana and coffee then blend again until completely smooth.

he people who write advertising slogans are clever with words. They can make a simple frozen chicken hugely appealing. A clever wordsmith named Ed McCabe was paid a substantial fee to write these ten words. “It takes a strong man to make a tender chicken.” This slogan for Perdue Chickens helped sell 15 million frozen chickens through American supermarkets in one year. Yes, the chickens were top quality meat. But the Perdue export department got it wrong. They translated the slogan into Spanish as “It takes an aroused man to make a chicken affectionate”. Hispanic and Mexican cooks were not amused. Three points to ponder. • Clever writers can earn substantial fees. • Translating English into other languages has traps for the unwary. • Proofreaders who understand two languages are valuable people in exporting, document translating and book publishing. “We show all our writing students how to get their articles, stories, poems or instruction books published,” says Brian Morris, Principal

at New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “They also get thoroughly proofread before being released.” Readers who are interested in writing or proofreading work at home should call 0800 801 994 and ask for the free report #805 When You Have A Passion For Story Telling. Whether your topic is food, electronics, cars, cooking, gardening, sport or business, there is satisfaction in getting your book written and published.

earn about ‘Antarctic Exploration in the Heroic Age’ at the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA), this term. This two-week course on Saturday morning introduces early Antarctic exploration and its link to New Zealand. “Pressing scientific questions demanded collaboration between different countries,” says course tutor Dr Ursula Rack. “Of greater public interest, however, was the touch of adventure. World War I brought Antarctic science to a halt, with the exception of the epic Endurance expedition, led by Ernest Shackleton, in which a New Zealand captain played a crucial part.” ‘Antarctic Exploration in the Heroic Age’ is one of several Saturday seminars at the WEA in October-November. Everyone is welcome to attend the courses, seminars and activity groups at the WEA which has been offering adult education in the city since 1915. The full list of courses on offer in October-November can be seen in our programme. ‘Ireland in the 21st Century’ is a Saturday afternoon seminar which critically examines the northern ‘settlement’, the southern economy and likely outcomes over the next decade. “The 21st century began with, officially at least, a great deal of promise,” says course tutor Dr Philip Ferguson. “Thirty years of armed conflict in the north came to an apparent end and the south of Ireland appeared to be entering a period of dynamic economic growth. By the end of the first decade of the century, however, things were less bright.” Two further Saturday afternoon seminars look at recent history in Iraq, post 2003, and

The second afternoon seminar on November 22 seeks to highlight the ideology behind the extremist groups in Syria and Iraq and to explain how first, their doctrine differs from the other Islamic schools and second, to explain why the ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq is not a sectarian war. ith plane tickets booked and paid for there is no turning back now. Our owners are regrettably relinquishing their beautifully renovated home and the lucky new owners will enjoy many years of happy memories, just like they have. ItalianStyleCuisine A fresh new menu makes Little Italy Restaurant in Bishopdale a must to visit. Occupying the front section of Farringtons Tavern, Little Italy Italian restaurant is a casual and charming eatery where you can relax and sample the best of Italian cuisine without travelling to Europe! First impression when you enter the restaurant is that you've walked into a Mediterranean café. It possesses a European rustic charm with gingham table clothes and picture windows complete with planted window boxes that look out on Italian landscapes. "Our new menu has an excellent range of delicious meals to suit everyone as well as a kiddies menu and a takeaway Pizza menu," said Mark Pearce, co-owner. Included on the menu is a huge selection of the expected traditional pasta and pizza dishes through to some interesting Italian flavour-infused mains. "Our Pork Belly Parmigiana Stack looks spectacular and is delicious. We slow cook the Pork Belly overnight making it so tender that it melts in your mouth. The pork is then served on a Buttery Mash with warm crisped Cabbage, Apple and Parsnip Puree, and finished with a Chunky Napoli Sauce and Mozzarella, "

FARRINGTONS TAVERN & LITTLE ITALY RESTAURANT is located at 119 Farrington Ave, Bishopdale. Phone 359 2930. Little Italy Restaurant is open daily from 11.30am to 9.30pm with no surcharge fee on Public Holidays. For more info go to www.littleitaly.co.nz or find them on facebook.

Treat the Kids!

said Mark. Another stand out main is their Pistachio Fettuccine - Pan seared Chicken is cooked in a white wine and cream sauce, tossed with a Pistachio Nut/Baby Spinach/Feta Pesto, and finished with fresh Parmesan. "Another spectacular looking dish is our Portobello Stack entree". Portobello Mushrooms are stuffed with Basil Pesto and Parmesan Cheese and finished with a roast Capsicum sauce. Little Italy is part of Farringtons Tavern and is open daily from 11.30am. With it's Italian concept theming, Little Italy is an ideal venue for private functions. It can comfortably accommodate parties of up to 70 people with catering to suit any budget and offers the perfect choice for your end of year work party. Mark and the team are happy to discuss options on 359 2930.
